New MOOC Released: Materials in Sport
Our research group is pleased to announce the launch of the new MOOC “Materials in Sport”, now available on the Edvance platform.
The course explores how advanced materials play a key role in shaping athletic performance and driving innovation in sports equipment and apparel. From carbon fiber structures to breathable and thermoregulating textiles, the MOOC provides an overview of how materials engineering supports athletes in achieving peak performance across different sports and environmental conditions.
Through a materials science perspective, the course introduces the fundamental principles behind strength, weight, durability, and thermal regulation, highlighting how these properties are tailored to meet the specific demands of sporting activities. A series of iconic case studies—including pole vaulting, tennis, running, and cycling—illustrates the complex interaction between the athlete, the equipment, and the surrounding environment.
Special attention is dedicated to thermal stress and the impact of hot and cold environments on athletic performance, with a focus on comfort, safety, and efficiency.
The MOOC is designed for students, researchers, and professionals interested in Sport Engineering, Materials Science, and Human Performance, and reflects our group’s commitment to education and innovation at the intersection of materials, sport, and the human body.
